The so-called bathhouse was the predecessor of today's sauna. This was the stone sweat bath, where warm stones were used to induce sweating. It is a traditional cultural practice that dates back to the Stone Age. In fact, it originated in Asia, where the first examples were discovered, and the sweat bath was brought to North, Central, and South America via migration routes, reaching the indigenous tribes. Simultaneously, it spread to the Ural Mountains through westward migrations. This has been documented for over 2000 years. From this migration came the Finns to present-day Finland, who are considered the cradle of sauna bathing in Europe. If you would like to learn more about the fascinating history of sauna bathing, we recommend the book by the Viennese publisher G. Zappert: "On Bathing Practices in Medieval and Later Times." Here you will learn how sauna bathing developed in Germany.

The Finnish bathing rules are recommended by numerous establishments in Germany:

• Please do not go into the bathroom on an empty stomach or immediately after eating.
• Please shower before entering the sauna each time – not only for hygiene reasons, but also to remove the bothersome oily film from the skin.
• Please dry yourself thoroughly before entering the sauna, as dry skin sweats better.
• Please enter the sauna relaxed and unclothed.
• Perhaps take a warm foot bath in the whirlpool beforehand. This acclimatizes the body and gets it into the right condition to be prepared for the heat.
• The humid warm air bath in the holiday home is for relaxation, and therefore the guests behave quietly.
• Please place a large bath towel on the bench. Plenty are provided in your accommodation.
• Since warm air rises, it is hotter on the upper benches.
• For first-time sauna users, it may be better to use the lower benches.
• Please sit down on the bench in the cabin for the last two minutes.
• If you feel unwell, please leave in good time.
• A session in a Finnish steam bath lasts between 8 and 15 minutes. Please never stay longer than fifteen minutes.
• Do you know what an infusion is? First, a few minutes of pre-sweating, and then, as a highlight, pouring water over it with a ladle and a mixed-in fragrance such as lemon, orange, or mint.
• Please do not go in or out during the infusion so that the full effect can develop.
• After your sauna, it's best to go outside into the garden for 10 minutes to get some fresh air. Walk around and breathe in the fresh Black Forest air. For added health benefits, take a refreshing cold shower afterward and get plenty of fresh air. This will help dissipate any remaining heat and cool your body down. This is good for preventing colds, and the warm foot bath will prevent you from sweating afterward.
• Then, let yourself be invigorated under the rain shower with a deluge of cold water, and if you wish, take a foot bath afterwards.
• Then it's time to rest or do another round. Repeat this 1-3 times, taking a dip in the hot tub at your holiday home in between. Afterwards, rest.
• When resting, you wrap yourself in blankets and watch the crackling fireplace from the sofa in your home and relax.
• Do not drink until after the last round.
