The Black Forest is the most visited tourist destination of all the low mountain ranges and the largest contiguous low mountain range in Germany. It is situated in a sunny, warm location in the far southwest of Baden-Württemberg.
It is mostly heavily forested and stretches from the High Rhine in the far south to the Kraichgau region in the north. This makes a holiday in a Black Forest vacation rental with a dog ideal. To the west, it borders the Upper Rhine Valley, and to the east, it merges into the Gäu, the Baar, and the hilly Klettgau region. Its size is impressive: it extends 150 km from north to south and has a maximum width of 50 km from east to west. The mountains reach a height of 1493 meters above sea level with the Feldberg. In the Northern Black Forest, the highest peak is the Hornisgrinde at 1163 meters. There you will find the most beautiful and longest Black Forest rivers, ideal for hiking and experiencing the Black Forest rafting tradition. Notable rivers include: Kinzig (93 km), Enz (105 km), Nagold (90 km), Murg (79 km), Glatt (37 km), Wolfach (31 km), and Schiltach (30 km).
Especially in the northern Black Forest, you will find several natural cirque lakes, such as the Mummelsee. In addition, there are numerous beautiful reservoirs, such as the Schwarzenbach Dam in the Murg Valley, the Kleine Kinzig Dam near Alpirsbach, or the Nagold Dam, also known as the Erzgrube Dam in Seewald.

Numerous tourist destinations and leisure activities in the Black Forest
Among the larger cities, Freiburg and Baden-Baden stand out. Strasbourg in France and Basel are also within easy reach. Baden-Baden, for example, boasts several Roman thermal baths, a famous casino, and a festival. The thermal baths of Bad Herrenalb and Bad Wildbad, as well as the panoramic pool in Freudenstadt, are also worthwhile destinations for swimmers. Lake Constance is also easily accessible.
Beautiful places include the old imperial city of Gengenbach , the former district capital of Wolfach , Schiltach and Haslach in the Kinzig Valley (located on the German Timber-Frame Road), and the monastery town of Alpirsbach with its brewery and monastery. Other charming old towns include Altensteig, Dornstetten, Gernsbach, Villingen, and Zell am Harmersbach. Freudenstadt boasts the largest market square in Germany, and just 9 km away in a hiker's paradise, Baiersbronn is Germany's undisputed center of haute cuisine. The Murg Valley, the Kinzig Valley, the Triberg Waterfalls , and the Vogtsbauernhof Open-Air Museum in Gutach are also popular destinations for those staying in holiday homes. You can usually reach access to hiking trails on foot from your holiday home. There are numerous beautiful hiking trails, some of which are known far beyond the region. Long-distance hiking trails were established in the last century, thanks primarily to the volunteer Black Forest associations. These include the Westweg , Mittelweg, Ostweg, Kinzigtaler Jakobsweg, and many other very scenic routes. In recent years, many themed trails have been created, such as the Dornstetten Barefoot Park, the Sensory Park in Haslach, and the Schluchtensteig (Gorge Trail).
