For those seeking peace and quiet: Black Forest wellness near the Nagold Dam
We don't know about you, but we think games are an essential part of a really good family or group holiday! And not just because holidays with children are so much more relaxing when the active little ones have plenty of time to run around and play during the day.
That's why we particularly enjoy making the Black Forest, with its myths, legends, culinary specialties and magnificent nature, a playful experience
Depending on the number of people, different games are naturally more suitable for groups. Because we know this, there are 3 separate pages dedicated to it:
Holiday home games for 4-8 people
Holiday home games for 10-14 people
Holiday home games for 16-20 people
Do you or your children have any fantastic play ideas for holiday homes? If so, we would be absolutely delighted (as we say here in the Black Forest) if you would send them to us.

Black Forest ham is famous not only in Germany, but all over the world. That's why even holidaymakers here are on the hunt for good ham. But can the dangerous ham catcher catch enough piggies during your holiday? Or will they outsmart him with some seriously good teamwork? An active game for holidays with children, where the little ones can really let loose.
Age of players: 5 – 125
Number of players: 6 – 20
Required: Adhesive tape or chalk for marking the floor
Game description: At the beginning, an area of the playing area in the holiday home with a garden is marked as the "hospital" (e.g., the holiday home's terrace). One player is randomly chosen to be the "ham catcher." All the others run around as piglets, grunting loudly. The ham catcher catches a piglet by poking it in the upper arms, thighs, or belly. While doing so, they shout "Ham room!" From that moment on, the poor piglet can no longer move. But it can be rescued! Two other piglets can take it to the pig hospital. To do this, they take the piglet in the middle and carry it to the hospital. For larger piglets, it's enough to link arms on either side. According to the Black Forest Ham Catchers' code of honor, a piglet transporting an ambulance must not be poked. Once the rescuers have successfully brought the piglet to the hospital, it is healthy again and can run around once more. The game continues until all the piglets have been caught or the ham catcher gives up.
Legend has it that once upon a time, a young shepherd fell in love with a beautiful ghost woman from Mummelsee. She begged him never to follow her to the lake, so as not to disturb the stillness of the dark waters. When, overcome by longing, he did so once, the lake turned blood red. A deep groan rose from its depths. The young shepherd ran home in terror, where he collapsed with a groan and died. In our games for groups, the ghost woman can also be a man. But the deadly antics continue until the eerie being is unmasked. This game is also suitable for rainy days in a vacation rental.
Age of players: 7 – 127
Number of players: 6 – 20
Instructions: Before the game begins, one player is chosen as the detective, who gives the command to unmask the Mummelsee ghost. The detective cannot be killed. All other players are lovestruck shepherds. At the start of the game, as many slips of paper are made as there are players. Each slip has a ghost drawn on it. Every player draws a slip. Now all players move around the room (e.g., one of the spacious living rooms in a holiday home for groups), sighing or flute-like in love, as the young shepherd did in the legend. The ghost kills their victim with a subtle wink. The victim dies visibly with loud groans and moans. The detective asks all the surviving players to stand in a circle and asks each person to voice their suspicion about who the murderous ghost is. The detective also does so. Then the detective gives the signal "Unmask the murderous ghost!" Everyone points to the person they believe to be the ghost. If that person receives the most votes, they are unmasked. If not, there's another round in which the players move around the room and the ghost can choose a new victim. Then there's another round of guessing, giving players another chance to unmask the ghost. If only 3 players remain at the end, the ghost wins. Warning: Of course, the detective could also be the murderous ghost!

The Black Forest is rich in wildlife. While most people are familiar with the bellowing of stags, few know that roebucks bark much like dogs during the rutting season to attract the does. This game is a great way to encourage tired children to keep walking and also teach them interesting facts about the forest. And we promise that your children will fall into the cozy beds of our child-friendly family accommodations exhausted by evening.
Age of players: 5 – 125
Number of players:7 – 20
Required: for variant 2, a blindfold
Instructions: One child/player is chosen to be the doe. This child closes their eyes and counts to 50. Meanwhile, the other players hide further ahead on the hiking trail as bucks in the woods. The doe must find and tag the bucks. They must announce their presence with a short, repeated bark. Once all the bucks have been caught, a new doe is chosen. If you want to keep the children occupied the evening before this forest game at your holiday accommodation, they can make antlers using small branches, wire, and a headband.
Variation for a forest clearing: The players stand in a circle in a forest clearing or meadow. One player is chosen as the "buck," another as the "doe." Both are then blindfolded. The other players position the doe and buck as far apart as possible. The doe is then spun around 1-3 times and given the task of finding the buck. The buck, in turn, tries to avoid being caught by the doe. However, he must repeatedly draw attention to himself by barking several times. Once the doe has found her buck, a new pair is chosen.
Some culinary specialties, such as smoked Black Forest ham, aromatic fir honey, and Black Forest cherry cake, have achieved worldwide fame. And gourmets will find renowned Michelin-starred restaurants not only in Baiersbronn, Sulzburg, and Baden-Baden, but throughout Germany. By the way, all our kitchens in our holiday accommodations are fully equipped for relaxed cooking. If you need anything, just let us know!
Ham and noodles are a firm favorite with many children. That's why this pasta bake is usually a sure thing for a family holiday in the Black Forest. It's also delicious as a vegetarian option with finely chopped, roasted hazelnuts and Swiss chard or spinach.
Ingredients for 10 people
1250 g spiral pasta,
3 small red onions (or 2 large),
1 bunch of parsley,
1 bunch of chives,
2 cloves of garlic,
5 tablespoons crème fraîche or sour cream,
500 g diced Black Forest ham,
5 handfuls of grated Black Forest mountain cheese (or Parmesan),
7 eggs,
200 ml milk
, salt and pepper
, clarified butter or oil for frying
preparation
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit). Cook the macaroni and drain. Finely chop the garlic cloves or press them through a garlic press. Chop the herbs as well – the parsley stems are particularly rich in beneficial nutrients! Heat clarified butter or oil in a pan. Add the ham and onions and fry over low heat until the ham is crispy and the onions are lightly browned. Transfer the pasta to 1-2 baking dishes (depending on size) and mix with ¾ of the herbs and the ham and onion mixture. Combine the crème fraîche, milk, half of the cheese, and the beaten eggs, and season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese.
Bake for approximately 35-40 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius. Serve sprinkled with fresh herbs.

This non-alcoholic punch is a wonderful way to warm up if you've booked a holiday home in November or over New Year's. If you'd like to make a second version with wine, simply replace the fruit tea with red wine and sweeten to taste.

We have a particular fondness for regional German cuisine. That's why we've developed recipes for groups, allowing you to experience the taste of home. Flammkuchen (Alsatian flatbread) is a delicious, quick dish enjoyed throughout the region. Our Flammkuchen is an autumnal vegetarian version, which fans of our Black Forest ham can also enhance with a few slices. When the aroma of Flammkuchen wafts through the listed building in Rottweil, the whole group will gather in no time. We promise!
