Freudenstadt is a town in Baden-Württemberg, located in the northern Black Forest. It lies 65 kilometers southwest of Stuttgart and 60 kilometers south of Karlsruhe on a high plateau in the northern Black Forest. Freudenstadt's history is marked by planned construction followed by destruction. Due to its exposed geographical location in the Black Forest, Freudenstadt repeatedly became a pawn in the power struggles of the powerful. Founded in 1599 by Duke Frederick I of Württemberg as the intended residence of the Duchy of Württemberg, Freudenstadt suffered severe setbacks in its development, including a city fire, the Thirty Years' War, and the Second World War. Freudenstadt is today the seat of the district administration of the Freudenstadt district.
