Freudenstadt is a town in Baden-Württemberg, located in the northern Black Forest. It lies 65 kilometers southwest of Stuttgart and 60 kilometers south of Karlsruhe on a high plateau in the northern Black Forest. The town's districts are situated at altitudes ranging from 591 to 968 meters. Freudenstadt is a recognized health resort with a healing climate and Kneipp therapy facilities, and a traditional tourist destination. For this reason, overnight accommodations in private rooms and hotels, as well as vacation homes and apartments, were offered here from an early stage. Furthermore, the region boasts excellent cuisine, from simple, high-quality bistros to the Michelin-starred restaurants of Harald Wohlfahrt in Baiersbronn!
The district town's outlying villages of Kniebis, Musbach, Igelsberg, and Zwieselberg are particularly interesting for holidays. Besides traditional hotel stays, you'll find a number of attractive holiday apartments there.
In the immediate vicinity are Dornstetten, Baiersbronn, Loßburg, Alpirsbach, Hallwangen, Seewald and the Black Forest High Road.

Another highlight, attracting visitors from far beyond Freudenstadt and the Northern Black Forest, is the 4.5-hectare market square. This makes it the largest market square in Germany, located in the Northern Black Forest. Stroll through the town or hike in the Black Forest.
More than 400 kilometers of hiking and cycling trails invite you to an active holiday in summer. In particular, you can experience unspoiled nature on the over 100-kilometer-long "Red Deer Trail" circular hiking route.
For winter sports enthusiasts, there are cross-country ski trails with a total length of almost 100 kilometers and slopes for downhill skiing and snowboarding. A special experience is a ride on the night-lit cross-country ski trail in Kniebis, the highest district of Freudenstadt. Our tip: In winter, you'll experience a unique atmosphere in the Northern Black Forest.
Freudenstadt's history is marked by planned construction followed by destruction. Due to its exposed geographical location in the Black Forest, Freudenstadt repeatedly became a pawn in the power struggles of the powerful. Founded in 1599 by Duke Frederick I of Württemberg as the intended residence of the Duchy of Württemberg, Freudenstadt suffered severe setbacks in its development, including a city fire, the Thirty Years' War, and the Second World War. Today, hotels and vacation apartments for holidaymakers seeking relaxation stand in many of the city's historically significant locations.
Freudenstadt is today the seat of the district administration of the Freudenstadt district. For the surrounding communities, such as Alpirsbach, it serves as a regional center within the greater Pforzheim area. Since January 1, 1988, Freudenstadt has been a major district town. Together with the other towns in the district, it boasts numerous tourist facilities. It forms an administrative association with the municipalities of Bad Rippoldsau-Schapbach and Seewald.
