Not only known as a winter sports area, the Northern Black Forest attracts people and animals with its namesake forests, as well as wetlands, countless lakes for fishing, and colorful rock formations. In 2001, the Black Forest Central/North Nature Park was established, recognizing its importance as a nature recreation destination. Since 2015, the Black Forest National Park has been right on the doorstep of our vacation rentals that welcome dogs.

Combining vacation and training? That's exactly what we wanted to offer our customers, so we searched for truly suitable accommodation.

We found what we were looking for in the Black Forest at the Roth family's dream holiday home in Enzklösterle.

This house offers ample space, a large living and dining area, a kitchen for cooking together – all state-of-the-art.

After breakfast, we set off for various destinations in the surrounding area. Our itinerary included the Gertelbach waterfalls, the Schwarzenbach dam, the protected forest, Kaltenbronn with its high moor, Altensteig, and Bad Wildbad.

These hikes occasionally presented obstacles to overcome, a real challenge for some of the dogs! Wobbly bridges, narrow paths, rocks to climb – it was exciting.

Altensteig, with its winding old streets, invited us to try mantrailing. This meant that one person left the group and walked four streets away before hiding. The dogs then took turns searching for the "lost" person using their individual scent.

As is well known, animals love to follow scents. Therefore, tracking work was a key part of our training in open areas. We laid a 1 km trail of Gouda cheese over various surfaces. Five hours later, the dogs were given the control scent of Gouda cheese to smell, and then the search began. Our super-sniffers mastered the trail without any problems and were rewarded with a delicious piece of cheese at the end.

Kaltenbronn was buried in snow, so there was a free search for treat bags in the deep snow. That wasn't so easy, and even the smallest one (a miniature poodle) bravely battled its way through the flakes. Everyone was very tired that evening.

Right in front of the holiday home, we conducted a training exercise on hunting control. A small toy mouse was pulled across the road on a thin string. The goal for both dog and handler was to continue walking at a calm pace. In other words, the dog shouldn't suddenly bolt to catch the mouse. It usually took a few attempts, but these dogs learned that waiting or checking with their handler makes more sense than impulsively bolting.

A hike took us to a remote area. The perfect place for a bit of a scare training session for the dogs. We call it stress inoculation training. We incorporate mild stressors into the search and retrieve exercises, so the dog hesitates at first, encouraged by its owner, but then overcomes its hesitation and retrieves the toy. The dog feels "yes, I did it!" and its trust in its owner is strengthened, because the owner has correctly assessed the situation as harmless.

During this stress inoculation training, I wore a Halloween mask and lurked behind a rock.

Dog and owner found relaxation on our final hike through the vineyards in Bühlertal. To our delight, the sun came out and we had a fantastic view.
