Not only known as a winter sports area, the northern Black Forest attracts people and animals with the forests that give it its name as well as with wet heaths, countless lakes for fishing in the Black Forest and the Buntstein formations. In 2001, the Black Forest Central/North Nature Park was established, reflecting its importance as a natural recreation destination. Since 2015, the Black Forest National Park has been right on the doorstep of our holiday apartments with dogs.

Combine vacation and training? This is exactly what we wanted to offer our customers and were looking for really suitable accommodation.

We found what we were looking for in the Black Forest with the Roth family in the Enzklösterle dream holiday home.

This house offers enough space, a large living-dining area, a kitchen for cooking together - everything is very modern.

After breakfast we set off to various destinations in the area. Our program included the Gertelbach waterfalls, the Schwarzenbach dam, the Bannwald, Kaltenbronn with its raised moor, Altensteig and Bad Wildbad.

On these hikes there were occasional obstacles to overcome, a real challenge for some Tölen! Wobbly bridges, narrow paths, rocks to climb, it was exciting.

Altensteig invited us to mantrailing with its winding old streets. That is, one person left the group and walked four blocks away and then hid. The dogs were then allowed to search for the “lost” person one after the other using the individual smell.

As is well known, the animals love to follow tracks. Therefore, tracking work was not neglected in open areas. We pulled a Gouda trail for 1 km over various surfaces. 5 hours later, the dogs were given the comparison odor “Gouda” to smell and then the search began. Our super noses mastered the trail without any problems and were happy about a delicious piece of cheese at the end.

Kaltenbronn was buried in snow, so there was a free search for food bags in the deep snow. It wasn't that easy and even the smallest one (toy poodle) fought bravely through the flakes. Everyone was very tired that evening.

We conducted hunting control training directly in front of the holiday home. A little fur mouse was dragged across the street with a thin string. The goal was for the dog and owner to continue running at a calm pace. In other words, the test subject should not rush to catch the mouse. It usually took a few restarts, but these dogs have found that waiting or asking the dog owner makes more sense than starting emotionally.

A hike took us to a lonely area. Just the right place for a scary program for the dogs. We call this stress inoculation training. When looking for and retrieving the bag, slight stressors are built in, so that the dog hesitates at first, spurred on by his human, but then overcomes himself and retrieves the bag. The dog has the feeling “yes, done” and trust in the human is strengthened because the human has correctly classified the situation as harmless.

During this stress inoculation training, I had a Halloween mask on and was lurking behind a rock.

Dog and owner found relaxation on our final vineyard hike in Bühlertal. To our delight, the sun came out and we had a great view.
