The Benedictine monks put a linden tree in front of the gate that led from the "world" into the monastery and built a fountain (in front of the gate). Since then, the fountain has always been maintained and only moved a few meters every now and then. The linden tree, which is now around 100 years old, has been replaced again and again because not even a linden tree lives to be 900 years old.
There are two “Schlößle” in Alpirsbach. One is Ambrosius-Blarer-Platz 5. The building was built in 1708 by the official clerk Weißer (second man in the monastery office and tax officer) and is generally referred to as the "Schlößle", but this is not the original! It has always been privately owned by Alpirsbach citizens. The house at Ambrosius-Blarer-Platz 3 (Schillinger) is the “old monastery inn” and was built in the 15th century. In 1520 it was replaced as an inn by a new house (Haus Würth) built by Abbot Alexius. Since then it has been used as a private house.
Today's town hall, a Renaissance building, was built in 1566 as a courthouse by Konrad Maier, administrator of the monastery office. The arcades used to be bricked up. After a fire in 1940, they were reopened and the town hall was expanded by another floor. Today the city administration is housed here.

“In the villages and towns of a long time ago, which has been so far away for us, a dark figure was seen…”. It was the night watchman Kaspar who roamed the streets and alleys of the monastery town around 1860 with his bugle to warn and protect the citizens from fire, but also from thieves and highwaymen.
A farmer's wife around 1850, portrayed by Gretel Kommer, tells the story and stories from that time. For the tour of the farmer's wife, the meeting point is at the tower of the Leutkirche.
During the tour through the historic Alpirsbach, visitors learn many amazing things from the Middle Ages: how people protected themselves from contagious diseases and enchanted love, what "bread from heaven" tastes like, how people lived back then and who they believed and trusted.
All tours can be booked as group tours at the city information office, Tel. 07444/9516-281 or stadt-info@alpirsbach.de . Contribution towards expenses €4.00/person (min. €60).
