In the end, decide for yourself which part of the cycle path you like best. You will find that each section is unique in its own way. Let the mostly gently flowing Kinzig take you with you on your bike tours. The nice thing about the route is that it is very suitable for the whole family, because all the meters in altitude that have to be overcome along the river down the valley are child's play.
You either get in in Freudenstadt or if you are staying in one of the holiday homes, for example in the luxury holiday home Dieboldsberg or the wellness holiday home Fronwald in Alpirsbach or in the chalet holiday home from private in Loßburg, from there.
A very well signposted cycle path, mostly away from country and federal roads, takes you from Alpirsbach to Schenkenzell. We unconsciously cross the border to the Baden part of the “Ländle”. The Schenkenburg castle ruins, which the path leads us directly past, would certainly be a pleasure to visit. The Ristorante Schenkenburg, , has a romantic flair and is highly recommended if we weren't at the beginning of our tour.
Further along the cycle path in the Kinzigtal is the picturesque half-timbered town of Schiltach . You should definitely pay a short visit to the old town with its town hall and fountain, as well as the “Schhüttesäge” sawmill, which dates back to 1491. The numerous shops and cafes invite you to stroll or take a short break. We follow the Kinzig Valley over an old railway bridge, past a show raft that is reminiscent of the time of the raftsmen.
Well signposted, we keep leaving small, picturesque towns behind us and we notice that the valley is opening up more and more and the Kinzig is getting more and more air to breathe. Passing countless, seemingly abandoned and detached Black Forest farms, we reach the well-known rafting and timber trading town of Wolfach . Once there, the path takes us through the approximately 500 meter long pedestrian zone, which is lined with half-timbered houses on both sides. Anyone who is interested in the timber trade of that time and the raftsmen who lived back then can obtain further information at the show raft and at the tourist information center. After leaving the old town, we reach the glassblowing factory after a few minutes. Here you get an insight into the centuries-old craft. A museum, glassblowing demonstrations and the Glassland with its souvenirs can make you forget your time here.
Further along the Kinzig we reach Hausach , “the city under the castle”. Even from afar it becomes clear why this city truly deserves its name. In addition to the “Erzpoche” open-air mining museum and the Black Forest model railway (replica of the large Black Forest railway, which is considered the most beautiful low mountain railway in Europe), this castle called Husen, built in the 12th century, is one of the sights of Hausach. From Hausach we now have the opportunity to turn into the Gutachtal.
Gutach - a place that couldn't reflect the region's tradition and cultural art better. In the open-air museum of the “Vogtsbauernhöfe” you can get to know life from times gone by. True-to-life farms, work and costumes from long-forgotten times take us back in time and bring us closer to a piece of tradition. A must for every holiday guest. However, not recommended as part of the bike tour on the Kinzigtal bike path, as you should take a whole day for this museum.
Our gaze soon falls on the two onion domes of the Steinach parish church, which rise high above the town.
The symbol of Steinach, however, is the “old eagle”. A renovated half-timbered house like something out of a picture book. Here you can marvel at the half-timbered art from 1716. The local history museum, located right next door, provides additional information about the earlier distillery craft and some of the Swabian customs (note opening times. Now the Kinzigtal opens up in all its splendor. In Biberach we are now faced with the difficult decision of whether we should go to the Harmersbachtal on the right, where the two The medieval towns of Zell and Oberharmersbach are waiting for us or whether we continue to follow the regular route. If you want to end your tour here, you can do so in one of the many Vesperstuben for which Oberharmersbach is known. Connection to the Ortenau S-Bahn is also possible here
see Gengenbach , shrouded in vines, from Biberach, where Kinzig and Erlenbach meet, A listed old town that is rarely found in Germany. Romantic alleys run through the entire old town. City gates, half-timbered buildings and a town hall, which is used as the world's largest Advent calendar in December. You immediately feel at home here.
Our tip: Slightly hidden in a backyard right next to the market fountain, in the heart of the old town, is the Fools' Fountain, cast from bronze. Some typical Baden restaurants have settled around this, where you now have to decide which tarte flambée you like best. A glass of Baden wine may round off your tour here. Or you can go to the Reichenbach district and visit the Eichbergstrauße when it is open twice a year.
If you want to cycle the Kinzigtal cycle path to the end, follow the signposted path to Offenburg, past countless orchards and vineyards through the small village of Ohlsbach, whose mineral spring produces the purest brine water 365 days a year. Recharge your batteries here one last time for the final sprint.
One of the highlights in the Kinzigtal awaits you at the end of our tour: Ortenberg Castle towers majestically above the town of the same name. A very well-preserved castle complex from the 11th century. The castle, which is now used as a youth hostel, can be visited at any time. And if the weather is good, the breathtaking view extends as far as Strasbourg Cathedral in France. To do this, however, you have to climb the narrow stairs to the mold tower, which was previously used as a dungeon.
The rest of the route leads to Offenburg, where the Kinzigtal cycle path has found its final destination... back to Alpirsbach, Loßburg or Freudenstadt.
The Ortenau light rail in the direction of Freudenstadt takes you every hour, including your bike, comfortably to Alpirsbach, Loßburg or Freudenstadt - your starting point. Each of the places described in the tour report has a connection to train traffic.
From Offenburg the train takes about 1:20 hours to Alpirsbach, 10 minutes longer to Loßburg and in 5 more minutes you are in Freudenstadt.

There are great cycling tours :
as well as other ADFC quality cycle routes for tourism.
An absolute cycling highlight in the region, admittedly only suitable for sporty cyclists, is the SURM that takes place in Alpirsbach. The SURM is very well known internationally and takes place once a year, usually in September. The organizer is the Alpirsbach eV cycling club. The SURM is one of the most difficult cycling marathons in all of Germany - participation in it is correspondingly important and prestigious. Top drivers and professionals also take part here. Cyclists can compete in three different tours:
- Short bike tour: 95 km long and 1200 meters in altitude
- Medium route (medium difficulty): 146 km with 1900 meters altitude
- Long cycling marathon tour: 233 km with 3800 (!) meters of altitude
A really great route through the entire Black Forest. mountain bike cycle path leads from the Rhine plain near Karlsruhe and then over the beautiful mountains and valleys of the northern Black Forest to Lörrach on the Swiss border . You drive and cycle from north to south over a total length of 375 km. There are a lot of climbs up the mountain ranges and back into the beautiful Black Forest valleys. This tour is not suitable for racing bikes and simple touring bikes but is suitable for mountain bikers or an e-MTB . The demanding route can be ridden in 4 days or more. Or you can choose any section of the cycle path as a day tour from one of your holiday homes in the northern Black Forest. The holiday homes are close to the cycle path. We will publish further tips for MTB tours shortly.
