Circular hike to the Grandfather Fir, the largest fir in the Black Forest

The roots of the Black Forest

The starting point of our tour is the lower market square in the heart of Freudenstadt. There are numerous parking options directly at the water features, from where we will start our tour. At the lower part of the market square we cross a plant-rich and lovingly landscaped park, which attracts numerous guests on summer days. In the background there is the imposing town church with its two towers, in front of which we turn right. Here we come across the first signpost that guides us in the direction of “Wölperwiesenweg” .

From the market square to the Grandfather Tanne and back over the Friedrichshöhe

Almost straight, slightly sloping, we cross three cross streets (Schickhardt, - Alfred, - Gärtner, - and Rappenstraße) and continue on an asphalted path, from which after a few meters there is an excellent view of the nearby Christophstal.

We follow the path slightly uphill (do not descend into the valley) until we reach the “Bässler Bridge” after about 300m. This leads us safely over the B28 and suddenly we are no longer in the city center, but in one of the many fir forests that surround Freudenstadt.

As if out of nowhere, the city, which had just been so lively, falls silent and we find ourselves in complete peace, on a forest path. After a brief inspection of the information boards at the beginning of the path, we stick to the left-hand path (right for cyclists) towards Agnesruhe, our next stopover. From here we follow the red diamond with a white core or the “Tannenriesen” .

The path leads us only slightly uphill through the typical, densely covered fir forests of our homeland. After about 45 minutes we reach the Agnesruhe. A lovingly prepared refuge in the middle of an intersection, which invites you to take a short break.

We follow the signs and turn left at Agnesruhe. After a few meters on this narrow forest path, we follow the signs until we find ourselves directly on a country road. We keep to the right on the sidewalk and after a few meters we reach the “Lauferbrunnen” and the hiking car park directly opposite with the fountain of the same name, which provides us with the necessary cooling on hot summer days.

An information booth shows us the hiking trails in the surrounding area.

From here we follow the signs for “Grandfather Tanne” and now stick to the yellow diamond.

After a few minutes' walk, we turn onto an adventurous trail lined with tree roots, which requires some sure-footedness when it's wet. We cross another country road with little traffic, continuing towards “Tannenriesen”.

As if out of nowhere, we suddenly find ourselves in front of one of the mega fir trees described, which is right on the side of the path. Even if we already feel tiny in the face of the tree, we should still be patient, because a few meters further the signpost points directly to the grandfather fir, which is set back a little. Provably the largest and strongest fir in the entire Black Forest . The 300-year-old, 47m high and 1.55m thick fir tree towers impressively in front of us. We wonder how many storms and thunderstorms she has withstood to date and wish her just as much steadfastness for the next 300 years.

We leave the huge trees behind us and follow the path towards “Friedrichshöhe/Friedrichsturm/ Kienberg ”, the local mountain of the people of Freudenstadt. From the Friedrichsturm we have a wonderful view of Freudenstadt up to the Hornisgrinde, the highest mountain in the northern Black Forest at 1163m.

The tower, a gift from 1899 to the city for its 300th anniversary, is freely accessible and definitely worth a climb. We can end our tour in peace at “Friedrichs”, a garden restaurant located directly at the tower.

We then follow the descending path towards “Park Courbevoie” / “Marktplatz” and pass a newly created mini golf area back to our starting point, the Freudenstadt market square.
